Bus was both comfortable and on time. $68 return per person is pretty reasonable for not having to drive up the icy track yourself.

It was over an hour and a half until the next bus and I needed a ride down to the car park at the base of the mountain. I was informed by the receptionist that the cost would be $400. I asked her if they were burning gold in the tank and she informed me the reason for the cost was that I would be taking a driver off the mountain. Absolute extortion! My vehicle was parked less than 20 minutes away. Whilst this exchange was taking place 5-6 taxi drivers were sitting around in the office with no work do do. One of them made a remark that it would take a long time as cars were banked up at the gate at the bottom of the mountain. My car was parked inside the gate and (after a friend gave me a lift) there was almost no traffic between the MMBL office and my intended destination. This poor review wont make any difference as the sharks have a monopoly on the taxi industry on the mountain. No competition means they can provide as poor a service as possible and get away with it. I am going to make a complaint to the ACCC and Department of Fair Trade and have also submitted a compliant the the ABC's "The checkout". Having grown up in the area is makes me sad that we are happy to extort tourists in such a predatory manner.
